The site is layed out this way:

The Front Page

Top (the top of the front page): these articles are original reporting–they include comments and interviews obtained by journalists, original photo series, original news reporting (a story or in some cases angle that has not been covered by others), etc. This is placed here because 1) it best represents The Speaker as a source of original news; 2) it gives stories that took invested effort, and which may not have other exposure (since they are not already known stories) a place where readers can find them.

Opinion and Analysis (currently this is directly under Top, but alternates with Contributors): these articles represent the opinions, feelings and impressions of people around the world with regard to the news stories happening right now (particularly if the story is one we have covered). They provide something of the human experience, and also ground events. They also provide a point from which a discussion can take place–they stimulate conversation, debate, feeling and understanding.

Contributors: this includes citizen journalists, photo journalists and guest writers. This is a very important area for The Speaker. We want to include as many people as possible in the news, and we want those people to be able to reach out to be heard by people around the world.

(Note: you may see an article appear in a place where you wouldn’t have expected it to show up. Sometimes, if an article has recently been published to one section, we publish a later article to another section in order that they may both get more exposure and so that the sections of the page move regularly.)
