How to participate in news at The Speaker
Most article submissions are done directly through our website. This is available to anyone who has published 1-3 article with us, but a first article should be submitted by email.
BASICS
FIRST ARTICLE: Send the article in an email or attached as a .doc/.odt/plaintext file (do NOT send a .pdf) to [email protected]. Tell us that you intend to submit again in the future, and we will send you a user account. The SUBJECT LINE of your email should read, “Guest Post: (Headline).”
Basic requirements of all articles we publish:
– You must provide the sources of your information (provide us with links to the webpages / corroborating news coverage. If your reporting is completely original, tell us that it is, and provide us with a link to context.
– Proofread your article before submitting it. It is the editors’ job to do what a writer cannot do–not to do what a writer does not want to do.
– Include a byline below the article.
– If your English is not fluent, write SHORT sentences.
What you have read so far is enough to submit to us. For those who want to proceed past the very basics,
– We use AP style.
– We link the text of the article (text is linked to the source/corroborating material rather than having sources below the article in a list). If you are submitting plain text (for example, if you are sending an email and you cannot link the text), provide the link in parenthesis after the text that should be linked.
– Single space –there are NO double-spaces — in the text, including after periods. Single space vertically between paragraphs as well.
If you do not hear back from us within two hours of submitting an article by email, it may be after hours (we often have editors on after-hours as well, but not always). Email a second time to confirm that we have received your email.
REGULAR USE
After we have sent you a user account, you can submit using WordPress. How To Use WordPress.
You will want to select your own featured (and other) images. About images.
Meta information is how search engines see your article. This is how internet users will find and read your work. About Meta (coming soon).
When you submit something through WordPress, email [email protected] with a subject line reading “Contributor post: (Headline) is ready to be published.” If you do not hear back from us within two hours, it may be after hours (we often have editors on after-hours as well, but not always). Email a second time to confirm that we have received your email.
