Intermediate news writing 201

Journalists at The Speaker write in AP Style. There are comprehensive manuals on AP (here is a good one), but most of what you need to get started is covered in a very short webpage HERE.

There are many ways a news piece can be written. In “Basic news writing,” we showed a very basic way which may serve as a good starting point.

Now you may want to think about other ways to write news besides the very plain style we showed you earlier. We can start by looking at leads–the beginnings of news articles.

Some leads are creative, some plain. Some leave out information, and this can be good or bad. Some leads focus on the setting or story of the news. Regardless there are a few things you want to avoid when writing leads. Remember, your lead can set the tone for your entire article.
